A Guide to Independent Reading
Step 1: Find a Book!
-You may choose any book in the library. It can be short or long, it can be fiction or nonfiction, and it can be any type or genre. Find
something that you are really interested in reading.
-Use the 5 Finger Rule
Before checking out your book, open it up to a random page and start reading. Hold up one finger for every word you don't know.
0-1 fingers means the book will probably be easy for you to read. Is it too easy or just right?
2-3 fingers means the book will probably be a challenge. Not all challenges are bad.
4-5 fingers means the book will probably be too hard for you. Pick another book.
